Is the fluoride in our water really good for our teeth?

I have added some information the article neglects to mention.

Source: Daily Mail

The Government wants 40 per cent of England’s water supply to be fluoridated to reduce high levels of tooth decay. But its critics say it has been linked to conditions such as hypothyrodism (underactive thyroid gland). Here we explain what you should know.

Q: What is fluoride?

A: A naturally occurring mineral found in water and some foods (such as tea and fish). It can also be chemically produced – as in toothpaste. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and makes teeth more resistant to acid attacks.

The fluoride they use for fluoridation is not naturally occurring. It is called Hydrofluosilic acid. More information about it can be found below, from No To Fluoridation;

Hydrofluosilic acid (H 2 SiF 6 ) and other fluorosilicates are not naturally occurring. They are waste products derived from the industrial manufacture of aluminium, zinc, uranium, aerosols, insecticides, fertilizers, plastics, lubricants and pharmaceuticals.

Professor Kaj Roholm , former Chief of the Toxicology Committee for the National Research Council the author of the first and most comprehensive monograph on fluorosilicates classifies hydrofluorosilic acid and hexafluorosilic acid as “extremely toxic.” One chemical company selling fluoride to water suppliers describes it as “a colourless to straw yellow, transparent, fuming, corrosive liquid with a pungent odour and irritating action on the skin.”

Hydrofluorosilic acid is listed as a Part II poisons under the Poisons Act 1972. As such its use as a commercially ingestible product in water contravenes UK and EU pharmaceutical legislation governing the regulation of medicinal substances, as well as the Poisons Act.

Q: What is water fluoridation? How does it work?

A: ‘Fluoride, like other minerals, is a natural constituent of all water supplies; fluoridation is the process of topping up low natural levels to a safe level known to be beneficial to dental health – around one part of fluoride to one million parts of water,’ says Michael Lennon, professor of clinical dentistry at the University of Sheffield and adviser to the British Fluoridation Society.

Fluoride at this level occurs naturally in water supplies in some places throughout the world. The purpose of fluoridation is to reduce tooth decay.’

That isn’t all it does.

Independent scientific evidence repeatedly showing up over the past 50 years reveals that fluoride allegedly shortens our life span, promotes cancer and various mental disturbances, accelerates osteoporosis and broken hips in old folks, and makes us stupid, docile, and subservient, all in one package. There are reports of aluminum in the brain possibly being a causative factor in Alzheimer`s Disease, and evidence points towards fluoride`s strong affinity for aluminum and also its ability to “trick” the blood-brain barrier by looking like the hydrogen ion, and thus allowing chemical access to brain tissue.

Q: Who has fluoridated water?

A: Only ten per cent of the UK’s water supplies are fluoridated – mainly in the West Midlands and North-East England, which were fluoridated in the Sixties. Worldwide, about 355million householders receive fluoridated water, including about 70 per cent of the US population.

From No To Fluoride;

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Finland, Luxembourg, Norway , Switzerland, West Germany, Netherlands and Italy have all banned the addition of hydrofluorosilic acid to drinking water. So have Japan and India, where fluoride occurs naturally and skeletal fluorosis (thickening of bones) is prevalent. In 1942, the Lancet reported severe dental fluorosis in areas where natural mineral salts such as calcium fluoride concentrations of one ppm – the Government’s “safe” limit – caused skeletal defects in children with poor nutrition.

Q: Why do we need fluoride in water?

A: ‘In fluoridated areas children experience less toothache and have fewer dental abscesses. Adults keep more of their own teeth for longer and suffer less root decay, and the cost to the NHS is reduced substantially,’ says Prof Lennon.

Q: Does drinking fluoridated water really protect teeth better than a fluoride toothpaste?

A: ‘No,’ says Paul Connett, professor of chemistry at Lawrence University in New York and scientific adviser to the Pure Water Association. ‘Leading researchers are now acknowledging that fluoride’s benefits are mainly topical (applying it directly to the teeth) and not systemic.

‘In other words, you don’t have to swallow fluoride to protect teeth. World Health Organisation figures show no difference in tooth decay in 12-year-olds between the vast majority of European countries which are not fluoridated and the few that are.’

When you fluoridate the water not only do you infringe in individual freedoms to choose (mass medication is illegal) you also create a situation where it is impossible to cap or track the amount of synthetic fluoride the public ingests. Fluoride is present in almost all man-made foods and drinks. It does have benefits to the state however;

“At the end of the Second World War, the United States Government sent Charles Eliot Perkins, a research worker in chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and pathology, to take charge of the vast Farben chemical plants in Germany.

“While there he was told by German chemists of a scheme which had been worked out by them during the war and adopted by the German General Staff.

“This was to control the population in any given area through mass medication of drinking water. In this scheme, sodium fluoride occupied a prominent place.

“Repeated doses of infinitesimal amounts of fluoride will in time reduce an individual’s power to resist domination by slowly poisoning and narcotizing a certain area of the brain and will thus make him submissive to the will of those who wish to govern him. “Both the Germans and the Russians added sodium fluoride to the drinking water of prisoners of war to make them stupid and docile.”

Q: What are the other worries with fluoride?

A: Excess fluoride can cause dental fluorosis, where the tooth enamel becomes mottled and discoloured from too much fluoride while the permanent teeth are still developing. Studies have also linked fluoridation with hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), bone diseases, cancers, infertility, early onset of puberty and hyperactivity. Eighteen studies have also shown drinking fluoridated water lowers IQ.

Fluoride’s Impact On The Brain;

“It is hard to believe that any “weight of evidence” analysis could possibly dismiss fluoride’s neurological impacts. There have now been over 40 animal studies which show that fluoride can damage the brain, and no less than 18 studies which show that fluoride lowers IQ in children, and only 2 that don’t. I look forward to reading the full report when it is made available,” says Paul Connett, PhD, FAN Executive Director.

New York – August 14, 2008 – Dr. Vyvyan Howard, a prominent fetal toxicologist said in a recent Canadian TV interview that current brain/fluoride research convinces him that we should stop water fluoridation.

Dr. Howard, President of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment and Senior Lecturer, Developmental Toxico-Pathology, University of Liverpool, England, made presentations at three Toronto Canada meetings of the International Society of Fluoride Research, Fluoride Action Network and the Citizens for a Safe Environment.

Studies done in several countries show that children’s IQ are likely to be lower in high natural water fluoride areas, said Howard. These studies are plausible because fluoride is known to affect the thyroid hormone which affects intelligence and fluoride is also a neurotoxicant, said Howard. Such studies have not been conducted in countries that artificially fluoridate the water such as the US, UK and Canada, but should be, he said.

Howard’s assessments came before publication of “Fluoride and Children’s Intelligence: A Meta-analysis” in Biological Trace Element Research by Tang et al concluding “A qualitative review of the studies found a consistent and strong association between the exposure to fluoride and low IQ.” (e-published ahead of print 8/10/08)

“This new brain research together with the NRC’s evidence of fluoride’s thyroid and bone damage and the CDC’s recommendation against use of fluoridated water in infant formula as well as the National Kidney Foundation’s withdrawal of their fluoridation support makes a strong case for ending this 60-year-old fluoridation experiment.” says attorney Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc

Fluoride, added to water supplies ostensibly to prevent tooth decay, is also in virtually all US non-organic foods and beverages from pesticide residues and processing with fluoridated water.

“There have now been over 40 animal studies which show that fluoride can damage the brain, and no less than 18 studies which show that fluoride lowers IQ in children, and only 2 that don’t,” says Paul Connett, PhD, Executive Director, Fluoride Action Network (FAN).

In 2006, the U.S. National Research Council’s (NRC) expert fluoride panel reviewed recent fluoride toxicology and concluded, “It’s apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain.”

Michael Connett, Project Director for the Fluoride Action Network co-authored a poster presentation at the International Association of Dental Research entitled, “Fluoride and its effect on human intelligence.” which identified 20 ecological studies that purport an association between high fluoride exposure and decreased human intelligence.

“The weight of evidence that’s on the table now says that, on a precautionary basis, we should stop this practice (fluoridation),” said Dr. Howard.

FAN is now working on getting an additional 7 Chinese studies published for the first time in English-language journals by the end of the year. These additional studies include two studies showing that fluoride can pass the placenta and damage the brain of the fetus, and 5 more studies finding a reduction in IQ among children exposed to excess fluoride.

“The Canadian Dental Association says there is no evidence to support the claims that fluoride in drinking water can lead to lower IQs,” reported the Lethbridge Herald

Here’s the evidence: http://www.FluorideAlert.org/brain

The President of the Ontario Dental Association further displayed ignorance of current fluoride research, apparently widespread in the dental community, when he insisted in the CTV broadcast that fluoride incorporates into children’s developing teeth to prevent decay. That theory was discarded long ago in favor of science which shows fluoride gets into tooth enamel by topical means alone.

A study by Yoder concluded, “The majority of dental professionals surveyed were unaware of the current understanding of fluoride’s predominant posteruptive mode of action.”

“No child is, or ever was, fluoride deficient. In fact, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control tells us that 1/3 of U.S school children are fluoride-overdosed causing dental fluorosis – white spotted, yellow, brown and/or pitted teeth. It’s time to stop fluoridation,” says Beeber.

After 60 years of water fluoridation, the CDC reports that 51% of 6 – 11 year-olds have cavities and 40% of 6 – 11 year-olds have fluorosis
